Is fluoride in my office water cooler?
Fluoride in water and in our office water cooler, is one of those topics that has a lot of stigma attached to it.
Many think that fluoride is something toxic for the body. Scientifically, they are incorrect. All chemicals however, from whatever source – human manufacture or natural – are potentially toxic at some dose!
Yet 60%- 87% of Australians are in favour of water fluoridation, according to the Australian Dental Association of NSW.
Is it bad for me?
Fluoride is in fact a natural substance found in soil, water, and foods.
While we can talk about all the benefits of fluoride in our drinking water, let’s focus on one topic today… our teeth.
Fluoride in our drinking water has a huge benefit for teeth, it prevents dental decay in children, adolescents, and adults.
What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay is preventable. This is where fluoridation in water helps.
Decay occurs when plaque and bacteria produce acids from the sugars and refined carbohydrates that we consume.
In the early stages, the minerals lost from the teeth following an acid attack are replaced during a remineralisation process.
But often if too many sugars are consumed throughout the day, this does not happen.
This is where fluoride steps in and helps in the recovery process by making teeth stronger to resist the acid attack and reversing the very early stages of mineral loss.
If tooth decay is not prevented and/or treated, it can result in pain, infection and tooth loss and can lead to a reduction in our overall well-being and quality of life.
So, why not be happy with fluoride in your water, at appropriate levels?
If this can prevent oral health concerns which in turn helps your overall health and wellbeing, isn’t it important?
