Why is it Important to Drink Plenty of Water Every Day?

Water is the most important substance our body needs. However, with the increasing variety of drinks and their affordability, most Aussies take water for granted, thinking any beverage will effectively hydrate their body. Little do they know, water can actually do a lot more for their health than they think, doing more than just quenching their thirst. Water is a necessity, crucial to survival. It is also vital when recovering from common illnesses and injuries. Soft drink, energy drinks and other beverages cannot boast the same and may even contribute to health issues.

Health guidelines recommend that a person needs to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but remember to listen to your body. If you are having a particularly active day, you may need to drink more water. Not only does this help fight against dehydration, but it will energise you for the rest of the day.

Water also aids in digestion and nutrient absorption. Before and after your daily meals, drinking water has been known to provide several benefits including:

  • help the stomach break down food faster
  • prevent constipation and bloating
  • keep you from overeating
  • assist in hydrating the body after digestion and replenish lost liquids

Another good reason to drink plenty of water is that our cells and body organs are very much dependent on water for them to function properly. For example, water can help our kidneys function better and water also serves as a lubricant for our joints.

Other benefits of drinking water include:

  • protection of the spinal cord and other sensitive tissue
  • regulation of body temperature
  • assisting the passage of the food through the intestines; and
  • removal of toxins through urination, perspiration and bowel movements

Even though food and drinks that contain water is abundant, there is nothing like good ol’ water to quench your thirst. If you find water boring, try fruit infusions to enhance its flavour. Perhaps consider adding sliced lemon or cucumber to your glass of water and enjoy! You may also give sparking water a try for that fizzy sensation. Just make sure to challenge yourself to drinking more water every day. The health benefits are incredible!
